Boat Racing Festival

Some of you might see the Boat Racing Festival in Luang Prabang on spot. If you did not yet experience it, we will tell you how it was. The Boat Racing Festival this year was held on 28th August. Locally the festival is called “Boun Suang Heua” or “Boun Deuan Kao” in Luang Prabang. On the pre-event's day, on the 27th August, from 6.00 AM to noon, there was a local fair locally called “Talad Nad” on the street from the Post Office to the Old Stadium. The road was crowded with people coming from the whole town of Luang Prabang and other provinces. On the 28th August, early the morning, as usual, there were alms giving where more than two monks and novices passed on the main street. Some people of Luang Prabang went to the temples to make the alms giving. Ladies wore local dress. From 10.00 AM, lots of people were on the Nam Khan Street. In the afternoon, the main event was on the Nam Khan River. The boats racing started at 13.15 and ended at 18.10 along the Nam Khan River. This year, 19 boats in total were on the racing. The order of the winner was as follows:

Day 2: Houei Sai - Muang Meuang (Houei Sai-Muang Meung about 120 km). (Breakfast). On the way, stop for visiting ethnic villages such Lanten, Lu, White Museu, Museu Black, Lao Kui Ikor. Upon arrival in Muang Meung, Check-in at the Guesthouse of Pa La or similar. Walking tour in the village. Free time. Overnight at the Pala Guesthouse or similar.

Day 3: Meuang Muang - Ban Xieng Dao - Xieng Kok - Ban Kha Lang - Yi Ban Ja - Lao / Myanmar border - Xieng Kok (Xieng Kok-Frontier Post: 17 km). (Breakfast) At 7.00 Am, breakfast, then transfer by Song Theow to Ban Xieng Dao (14 km), located along the Mekong River to board a local boat for the boat trip upstream on the Mekong to Xieng Kok. On the way visit villages of ethnic (Ikor, Lu). Your guide will distribute to you each of you a life jacket before boarding. You will contemplate the scenario of the Mekong for about 1 hour by boat. Arrive in Xieng Kok, check in at the Guesthouse. Proceed the tour on minivan on the road the Lao-Myanmar border. On the way, visit ethnic groups: Ikor, Museu, Lanten, Lao Kui. Return back to the Guesthouse. Free time. Overnight at Xieng Kok Resort.

Day 4: Xieng Kok - Muang Long - Muang Sing (70 Km) (Breakfast) At 7.00 Am, breakfast, then excursion on minivan from Xieng Kok to Muang Sing via Muang Long. On the way, multiple stops to visit the ethnic villages such as: Ikor, Lanten, Museu. Upon arrival in Muang Sing, check-in at Guesthouse. Free time. Overnight at Phou IU Guesthouse.

Day 5: Muang Sing (Discovery ethnic groups). (Breakfast). Difficulty of trekking: level 4/5 At 6.00 Am, visit the market Muang Sing. Breakfast at the Guesthouse, then transfer on minivan about 20 minutes (approximately 18 km) on the road from Muang Sing to Luang Namtha and then walk to the National Protected Area of Nam Ha in the mountains about an hour with 2 stops relax. Continuation of the trekking up the mountains and crossing forests. Visit a waterfall at about 1.30 hours; from there, panoramic view of the National Protected Area of Nam Ha. Crossing the primary forest and farmland to visit an Akha village (Ban Namdaet May). From the top of the mountain, you have an excellent view over the valley of Muang Sing, then continue walking to visit the Yao village (Ban Nam Mai). Your minivan will wait for you there. Day 6: Muang Sing and Luang Namtha-Ban Na Mor Nua (110 km). (Breakfast, Dinner) At 7.00 Am, breakfast, then excursion on minivan from Muang Sing to Luang Namtha. On the way visit villages of ethnic groups as: Ikor, Hmong, Lenten, Tai Dam. Sightseeing at Luang Namtha before continuing the road to Ban Na Mor Neua where you spend the night in the village. Here, we with the Chief of the Village, will prepare you dinner. Free time to visit the village, Dinner and homestay in Ban Na Mor Nua.

Day 7: Ban Na Mor Nua - Ban Navai (85 Km). (Breakfast, Dinner) At 7.00 Am, breakfast, thanks to the Head of the Village, then excursion on minivan to Ban Na Nua Ban Mor Navai. On the way visit villages of ethnic Ikor, Hmong, Tai DAm, Khmu, Lu. Upon arrival in Ban Navai (Lu Village), homestay in the Village Chief's house. On the way visit the former French colonial army camp in Boun Tai Viillage and visit ethnic villages: Ikor, Tai DAm, Hmong, Tai Lu. Upon arrival in Nhot Ou District, check-in at Manivong Guesthouse or similar. Free time. Overnight at Manivong Guesthouse or similar.

Day 9: Nhot Ou. (Breakfast) At 7.00 Am, breakfast, then excursion on minivan around Nhot Ou to explore the ethnic groups (Lolo Ikor, Lu, Phu Noi ethnic. Return back to the Guesthouse or similar. Leisure. Overnight at Manivong Guesthouse or similar.

Day 10: Nhot Ou - Boun Neua - Phongsaly (Breakfast) At 7.00 Am, breakfast, departure on minivan to the road Nhot Ou-Phongsaly through Boun Neua. On the way, stop at your requests. Arrive Phongsaly, check in at hotel. A short tour of the city. Free time. Overnight at Phoufa Hotel.

Day 11: Phongsaly - Hatsa - Muang Khoua - Muang Ngoi. (Breakfast) Breakfast at hotel, depart on minivan for Hatsa. Boarding the boat for the traditional lowering of the Nam Ou to Muang Ngoy. Stop at Muang Khoua. A quick tour of the city, further down the Nam Ou. Arrived in Muang Ngoi, check-in at Rattanavong Guesthouse or similar. Discover the Nam Ou from Phongsaly to Muang Ngoi on a traditional boat. Free time for feisure. Overnight at Rattanavong Guesthouse or similar.

Day 12: Muang Ngoi - Luang Prabang. (Breakfast) Breakfast at the Guesthouse, then continue the journey by boat down stream to Luang Prabang. On the way stop to visit the caves of Pak Ou. Pak Ou Caves are located about 25 km from Luang Prabang along the Mekong River and the mouth of the Nam Ou River. There are 2 caves: a cave at the bottom called 'Tham Ting, and a cave at the top called' Tham Pum '. There are thousands of statues and statuettes of Buddha in the traditional style of Luang Prabang. Visit Ban Xang Hai to see the local distillery of alcohol made from sticky rice. Arrival in Luang Prabang, transfer to Villa Santi Hotel or Santi Resort & Spa for check-in. Free time (you may visit the night market by yourself. The Night Market in Luang Prabang, starts from 5.00 PM - 9.30 PM). Overnight at the Villa Santi Hotel in town or Santi Resort & Spa.

Day 13: Luang Prabang (City Tour). (Breakfast) Breakfast at the hotel, then visit the World Heritage city starting to visit the former Royal Palace and Wat Mai, Wat Visoun, Wat Aham. Wat Xieng Thong. In the afternoon, visit Lu village Xang Khong, a weaving village and visit the Tsa paper production there. In the afternoon, climb to the summit of Mount Phousi for the panoramic view of the city and to admire the sunset over the Mekong. Visit the Night Market. Transfer to the hotel Free time. Night at the Villa Santi Hotel in town or Santi Resort & Spa.

Day 14: Luang Prabang (Elephant Camp and Kwangsi (Breakfast) Early, you may go see by yourself the alms giving where over two hundred monks passed on the main street.

Breakfast, then visit the local market, market Phosi. Then continue the tour on minivan to the Elephant Camp. On the way, stop to visit the Santi Chedi Stupa Phon Phao, a large golden stupa which has three floors. The interior walls are painted with images telling Buddhist stories. Getting on a long a longtail boat to the Elephant Camp. Arrival at Camp, ride on elephant for an hour and a half through the forest. Then boarding on a long tail boat to the Tad Tse waterfall. Rest in the cascade of Tad Tse. Continuation of the excursion on minivan to the cascade of Kwangsi. On the way, visit Hmong village NOUAN. Arriving at the waterfall, resting and swimming if you wish. Back at the hotel. Free time. Overnight at the Villa Santi Hotel in town or Santi Resort & Spa.

Day 15: Luang Prabang - Vang Vieng. (Breakfast). Breakfast at hotel, depart on minivan to Vang Vieng. Stop along the road to take pictures. Arrival in Vang Vieng, check-in at the Elephant Crossing Hotel or similar. Free time. Overnight at hotel. Overnight at Hotel Elephant Crossing or similar.

Day 16: Vang Vieng - Vientiane Capital. (Breakfast) Breakfast at the hotel, visit the Cave of Tham Chang and long tail boat trip on the Nam Song for an hour. Departure on minivan from Vang Vieng to Vientiane Capital. Arrived in Vientiane, transfer to City Inn Hotel for check-in. Free time for leisure. Overnight at City Inn Hotel.

Day 17: Vientiane Capital. (Breakfast) Breakfast at the hotel, city tour on minivan starting with a visit of Ho Phra Keo. built in 1560 by King Pra Keo to house Setthathirath Morakod, Wat Sisaket, built in 1818 by King Anouvong. the only temple that has survived from the Siamese invasion, visit Patuxay or "Gate of Victory", built in 1962. A unique panorama of the capital Vientiane is worth for a climb, then excursion to the Buddha Park and shopping at the “Mall " at Talad Sao. In the afternoon, discover the festival of That Luang Stupa “parade of various villages with offerings to the stupa”. Transfer to the hotel. Free time.

That Luang Stupa, built in 1566 by King Setthathirath when moving the capital of Xieng Thong (Luang Prabang) to Vientiane. It is the national symbol of Laos. Overnight at City Inn Hotel.

Day 18: Vientiane Capital. (Breakfast) Discover the That Luang festival, starting early in the morning by the great quest of the monks at That Luang. In the afternoon, traditional hockey game and evening the festival of lights around the stupa. Transfer to the hotel for overnight. Overnight at City Inn Hotel.

Day 19: Vientiane - Pakse - Phasouam – Tadlo (Breakfast) Early morning transfer to airport for flight from Vientiane to Pakse. Thanks to your guide and driver. Fly to Pakse on the flight QV512 from 6.30 Am. Arrival at Pakse airport, welcome by your new local guide and your new driver and drive to Tadlo. On the way stop to visit the waterfall “Tad Phasouam”. Wat Phou Khmer temple ruins, dating from the 11th - 12th century. Then departure for the visit Phou Asa. Ride on elephant. Day 22: Done Khong - Done Deth - Done Khone-Lyphy – Resort Khone Phapheng. (Breakfast). Stop in Done Khone and trek to the Somphamit (Liphi) waterfall. On the way, visit the old French bridge linking the island and the island Deth Done Done Khone, the first locomotive in Laos, then visit the Fall of Liphi. Walk to boat. Luang Prabang Highlights

Day 1: Arrival in Luang Prabang Our Guide will meet you at Luang Prabang Airport and will transfer with private transport to requested hotel for check-in. After short rest, the sightseeing of Luang Prabang World Heritage City will begin with the visit of Vat Visoun, Vat Aham, Vat May, Xieng Thong. Then climb up together the Phousi Hill with 328 steps to see the view of the town from the top the mount and the sun set on the Mekong River. The today sightseeing will end with the visit of the Night Market on the main street of Luang Prabang. Overnight at the hotel.

Day 2: Luang Prabang (B) Early in the morning (at 5.30AM or 5.45AM, depending on the season) guide will meet you at the lobby of your hotel, then transfer you to the town centre to assist to the alms-giving where more than 200 Monks pass on the main street. We will prepare you a box of sticky rice for the alms giving. After the processing, we will transfer you back to your hotel for breakfast. 08.30: We will continue the sightseeing by visiting the Former Royal Palace, then we will have a boat trip to the Holy Pak Ou Caves. Our guide will meet you at the lobby, then you will be transferred to the pier to embark on a small private traditional boat for the trip to Pak Ou Caves. On the way stop to visit local village on the Mekong River Banks. We then visit the Tam Ting Cave (the lower cave) and Tam Poum Cave (the upper cave).

15.00: Return by boat to Luang Prabang. On the way, stop visit Ban Sang Hai to see local traditional distillery ‘lao Lao'. Arrival in Luang Prabang, you will disembark at Ban Sang Khong Village to visit the Sa-a paper making and Lu weaving handicraft. We then continue the excursion by a land excursion to Tad Kwangsi, the splendid waterfall in the outskirt of Luang Prabang. On the way, you will visit Ban Na Ouane, a Hmong Village, moving from the Kwangsi area. You will see Hmong ladies pass their time in sewing and sell their handmade products in the village.

When you arrive at the Tad Kwangsi, you will feel the coolness of the waterfall. It is a relaxing site where you may swim and have a walk around. We return to town in the late afternoon. Overning at the hotel.

Day 3: Luang Prabang-Elephant Riding - Trekking (B) Your sightseeing today consists of elephant riding and trekking in the outskirts of the town. At 8.30AM, our Guide will meet you at the lobby of the hotel, then drive to the Elephant Camp. Here, you will have one hour and half for elephant riding through the forest and you will be able to feed elephant with bananas as a way to thank the elephant. We will drive you to Ban Xieng Lom Village for the trekking to Khmu Village. Lao picnic lunch at the local village. We will continue the trek to Tad Sae Waterfall, which is a series of low cascading falls with a large swimming pool for swimming and “monkey jumping” if you desire (no water in dry season). Then we will transfer you on a long tail boat to reach our minivan. We then transfer back to town. Overnight in Luang Prabang.

Day 4: Leaving Luang Prabang (B) Today, you will leave Luang Prabang (Laos). After breakfast, You have free time till check-out from the hotel before noon. Thenl transfer you to Luang Prabang Airport for leaving Luang Prabang.

Day 1: Xieng Khong – Bokeo (Ban Houeisay) – Luang Nam Tha: In the morning, your local English speaking Guide will welcome you at Bokeo International Border Check Point in Ban Houeisay and will assist you for the formality of Lao immigration. Then you will have a drive on a private minivan from Ban Houeisay Village of Bokeo Province to Luang Namtha on the high way that links Thailand to China. On the way visit one or two villages (lantene or (and) Khmu Village (s) on the way depending on the time of your arrival in Bokeo Province. Arrival in Luang Nam Tha, check-in at Dokchampa Hotel or similar. Free time and overnight at the hotel.

Day 2: Luang Nam Tha – Muang Sing (B): After breakfast at the hotel, you will visit the local market of Luang Nam Tha and will have excursion by land to Muang Sing District of Luang Nam Tha Province. Day 3: Muang Sing (Biking and walking by carrying the bicycle) (B): After breakfast at the Guesthouse, transfer to the tourist office to rent the bicycles and you will start the sightseeing on bicycle and sometimes you will walk by carrying your bicycle when climbing hills and when the road is not good.

First you will visit the the Lolo Village. After that you will go on biking to visit Ban Nong Bou (Tai Dam) to see weaving and visit Ban Khoum of Tai Neua ethnic group to see the local distillery “Muang Sing whisky”.

You will go on biking and walking up the hill to visit That Xieng Tung, a stupa on the hill. Then you will continue the biking to Ban Khan Mai to visit Hmong Village. After that you will go biking to visit Ban Silihuang, a Tai Nueua Village to see how people make the Khao Soi (Rice Noodle).

We return to town for lunch of your own charge.

After lunch, you will continue the biking to visit Akha Village of Ban Namdaet and visit Yao village (Ban Nammai, Ban Jonkha and Ban Saileck).

Then you will go on biking to visit Akha Village (Ban Phakha) and your visit will be ended with the visit of Tai Lue Village of Ban Donchai. Return to Tourist Office to return the bicycle. Then you will be transferred to the Guesthouse. Free Time and overnight at Guesthouse.

Day 6: Nong Khiow – Luang Prabang (B): After breakfast at the hotel, boat trip downstream on a private boat to Nong Khiow. From there, you will have a drive to Luang Prabang. On the way, stop to visit Khmu, Lu and Hmong villages. Arrival in Luang Prabang, check-in at Lao Wooden House, located in the center of the town. Free time. You may visit the Night Market by yourself on the main street. Overnight at the hotel.

Day 7: Luang Prabang (City Tour) (B): At 5.30AM or 5.45AM (depending on the season), as the Guesthouse in the center of the town, you may assist by yourself the alms giving where more than 200 Monks pass on the main street.

At 8.30 AM, after your breakfast, your guide will meet at the Guesthouse and he will show you Luang Prabang, the World Heritage City. The sightseeing on a private minivan will begin with the visit of the former Royal Palace, then you will visit Vat Visoun, Vat Aham, Vat May, Xieng Thong and Wat Xieng Thong. In the afternoon, you will visit Ban Xang Khong Village (Lu village) to see the weaving and the Sa paper hand made. The today' s sightseeing will be ended with the climb up of the Phousi Hill with 328 steps to see the view of the town from the top the mount and the sun set on the Mekong River. Return to the Guesthouse. Free time and overnight at the Guesthouse.

Day 8: Luang Prabang (Pak Ou Caves and Kwangsi Waterfall) (B): Today, your excursion consists of the boat trip to the Holy Caves at Pak Ou Districts and the excursion by land to the Kwangsi Waterfall.

After your breakfast, you will embark on private traditional boat for the boat trip up stream to visit the Pak Ou Caves. On the way, stop to visit one village on the Mekong River Bank and visit Tam Ting Cave (the lower cave) and Tam Poum Cave (the upper cave).

You will have lunch on your own at local restaurant there in Pak Ou Village. You will return by boat to Ban Xang Hai village to see local traditional distillery ‘lao Lao'. From there, continue the excursion by land on private minivan to Kwangsi Waterfall, the splendid waterfall in the outskirt of Luang Prabang. On the way, you will visit Ban Na Ouane, a Hmong Village, moving from the Kwangsi area. You will see Hmong ladies pass their time in sewing and sell their handmade products in the village. Arrival at Kwangsi Waterfall, relax, visit the waterfall or swim if you desire. Return to your Guesthouse. Free time and overnight there.

Day 9: Luang Prabang (Elephant Camp) (B): Your excursion today consists of elephant riding and trekking in the outskirts of the town.

At 8.30AM, your Guide will meet you at the lobby of the Guesthouse, then you visit the Phosi Fresh Market, after that you will have a drive to the Elephant Camp. Here, you will have one hour and half for elephant riding through the forest and you will be able to feed elephant with bananas as a way to thank the elephant. We will drive you to Ban Xieng Lom Village for the trekking to Khmu Village. Lunch on your own. You will continue the trek to Tad Sae Waterfall, which is a series of low cascading falls with a large swimming pool for swimming and “monkey jumping” if you desire. Then we will transfer you on a long tail boat to meet the minivan. You will be transferred to your Guesthouse. Free time and overnight at the Guesthouse.

Day 10: Luang Prabang - Phonsavanh (B): Breakfast at the Resort, then departure by land on private minivan to Phonesavanh District of Xieng Khouang Province. On the way, stop on your request to take photos or visit villages along the road. Arrival in Phonesavanh, check-in at Vansana Hotel. Proceed the excursion to the Plain of Jars (main site) and to Muang Khoune to visit ruins of the Indochina war. Return to the town. Free time and overnight at the hotel.

Day 11: Phonesavanh – Vang Vieng (B): Breakfast at the hotel, check out from the hotel, then visit the Phonsavanh Market and departure to Vang Vieng. Upon arrival there, you will check-in at Vansana Hotel on Nam Song River Banks or similar hotel. Visit the Tham Chang Cave. Return to hotel. Free time and overnight at the hotel.

Day 12: Discover Vang Vieng (B): Today you will discover the highlights of Vang Vieng. After your breakfast at the hotel, you will be transferred to access point to Ban Tham Xang Village. You will get across the Nam Song River by boat or traditional bridge to Ban Tham Xang. You will go on foot for about 5 minutes to Tham Xang Cave (Elephant Cave) to visit it. After that you will have a trek for 30 minutes to Tham Nam Cave (Water Cave). Here in the cave you will visit the cave with tubing (a tyre of van for floating on water ) for one hour.

Then you will go on kayaking on Nam Song River. After the kayaking, transfer you to the hotel. Free time. Overnight at the Hotel.

Day 13: Vang Vieng – Vientiane (B): After the breakfast at the hotel, you will leave on minivan for Vientiane Capital. Arrival in Vientiane, you will check-in at City Inn Hotel or similar.

In the afternoon, your guide will meet you again at the lobby and begin the sightseeing of Vientiane Capital, starting from the visit Ho Pra Keo, built in 1560 by King Setthathirath, used to house the Emerald Buddha (Pra Keo Morakod), then visit Wat Sisaket, built in 1818 by King Anouvong. Visit the Thatluang Stupa and climb up the Patuxay Monument to see the panoramic view of the town. Then you will visit the Holy Temple Vat Simuang. Return to the hotel. Free time. Overnight at the hotel.

DAY 14 : VIENTIANE-PAKSE-WAT PHOU-KHONG ISLAND (B): Breakfast at the City Inn Hotel, free time for leisure till transfer to the airport for flight to Pakse. Welcome at the airport by your local guide at Pakse Airport, then transfer to the quay for boat trip to Champasak, then proceed the trip by land to visit archaeological site Wat Phou. Lunch on your own at local restaurant there. Visit Wat Phou. Continue the excursion by land to Done Khong. Check-in at Villa Done Khong or similar. Dinner on your own at local restaurant. Free time for leisure. Overnight at the hotel.

DAY 15 : DONE KHONG (B): Breakfast at the guesthouse, excursion by boat through the “Si Phan Done” (“Four Thousand Islands”) and by land to Khone Prapheng Waterfall (the biggest waterfall in South East Asia). Lunch on your own at local restaurant during the excursion. In the afternoon, return by land to the hotel. Dinner on you own at local restaurant. Free time and overnight at the hotel.

DAY 16 : DONE KHONG - PHOU ASA - PHASOUAM - TAD LO (B): Breakfast at the hotel, return by land to Pakse. Stop at Phou Asa for elephant riding. Lunch on your own at local restaurant there. In the afternoon, proceed the route to Tad Lo. On the way stop to visit Phasouam Waterfall. Upon arrival, check-in at Say Tse Resort or Similar. Dinner on your own. Free time and overnight at the hotel.

DAY 17 : TAD LO – KATOU – TAD FANE – PAKSONG – PAKSE (B): Breakfast at the resort, then excursion by land to visit Katou Village. Continue the excursion to visit Tad Fane Waterfall and coffee and tea plantation at the Plateau Boloven. Continue the route to Pakse. Upon arrivalnin Pakse, check-in at Pakse Hotel or Similar. Dinner on your own. Free time and overnight at the hotel.

DAY 18 : LEAVING PAKSE - LAOS (B): Breakfast at the hotel, free time for leisure till transfer to the airport or Wang Tao Border Check Point for leaving Laos.
